...based on cinematic merit and not laugh out loud entertainment.
1. Cloverfield - Abrams ingenuisly marketed monster movie, using unknowns and handheld camera to enhance the audience's experience. Special effects used beuatifully and not just chucked in anywhere like Michael Bay would have done.
And although he didn't suceed in creating a new Godzilla for America, it was a pretty cool monster:
A SIDENOTE - Something quite special - while writing this i just caught my first televised trailer for Batman - The Dark Knight........ Hetah Ledger RIP.
2. No country for old men. Yes the chavs in the audience did moan with boredom, thinking that they would see a action packed film. Instead they had to wait and look forward to every time Javier Badem shot his pump, gun thing - still not sure what that is. But what a great movie. Nothing more to say really. And those of you that did not like the ending. Shame on you, you obviously did not follow the film that well. So for those of you that didn't like/get it is for you to watch again!

Tommy Lee Jones, such a great actor. Batman Forever was definitely his best performance.
And you didn't mention Cloverfield's excellent dialogue. Don't you remember classic lines such as "OH MY GOD! ROB!!!", "RUN! JUST KEEP RUNNING!" and "THE SUBWAY! THE SUBWAY!"
